American Council of Learned Societies Frederick Burkhardt Fellowship

American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS)

The Burkhardt Fellowships are generously supported by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for the American Council of Learned Societies. Alexa Alice Joubin was a Residential Fellow at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C.

With the support of the ACLS fellowship, she completed and published her book, Shakespeare and East Asia, with Oxford University Press in 2021. The book examines four themes that distinguish post-1950s East Asian cinemas and theaters from works in other parts of the world: Japanese formalistic innovations in sound and spectacle; reparative adaptations from China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong; the politics of gender and reception of films and productions in South Korea and the UK; and multilingual, diaspora works in Singapore and the UK.
